Description

Tokay geckos are one of the largest species of gecko in the world, with males (and some females) easily reaching over a foot in total length (including the tail). Native to south-east Asia, they have spread with the help of humans to many parts of the world, including the south-eastern US. Almost all of the tokay geckos for sale in the pet trade are wild-caught specimens, meaning they were captured from their native environment and transported to where they will be sold. Most also have some form of internal and/or external parasites. This is typically because they are wild caught and are kept in overcrowded conditions, especially during transport. My geckos are unique in that they are captive bred and free from harmful internal and external parasites. From the day they were born, each has been housed individually and fed an optimal diet, which make them some of the healthiest geckos available.

Tokay geckos make very interesting pets, but are notorious for their aggressive nature; most will bite their owner if given the chance. Because of their aggressiveness, they are unfit pets for children; owners will require some practice handling them to avoid being bit. Some tokay geckos will become docile with frequent interaction with people, but others will remain very aggressive no matter how patiently you work with them. Tokay geckos have a typical lifespan of 10-20 years -- if provided with proper husbandry and health care. As such, choosing to own one is a significant commitment.

Many people wonder why anyone would want to own such an aggressive animal. The answer is simple: not only are they beautiful, they also have fascinating behaviors to observe and enjoy -- even if you never get to handle them. They have unique mating calls and other vocalizations. In fact, the name "tokay" comes from the sound of one of their vocalizations. In a well planned, planted, and maintained terrarium, tokay geckos can simply be great fun to watch.
